I am not denying that his songs were remembered vastly, nor am I denying that the new pop stars worshiped him and he was a big influence on them. But nobody would tell you they were an MJ fan because his controversies were so big that it was simply embarrassing to stan for him. He was simply a joke in the media and press at that time.
I loved him before his death and sometimes got made fun of but I didn't care, after his death everyone would ask me about him and everything

Everyone knew me as a huge MJ fan and he died the second to last day of school so when I went to school the next day everyone came running up to me...it was a very emotional day for me

His music + videos were ALWAYS revered though. Thriller remained relevant through 3 decades of Halloween parties, and people still did the moonwalk regardless.
She has plenty of respect from the new generation of musicians. Literally any new generation pop girl you can name and even some alternatives name her as an influence.
I really don't though. I mean, I watched the Thriller video once just to see what the fuss was about, but other than that I've never knowingly or intentionally heard any of his music.
