You do not have to know the charts. Charts reflect what is popular, they exist to tell you which song is more popular than the other if you are interested. They don't create a songs popularity just measure it, that is why if you ever want to find out which song is more popular or how popular the song you love was you look up it's chart positions.

I think the problem people have with Madonna is what she's putting out at age 55. Sure, call it ageist. If a 20-something released an album like MDNA and songs like "Girl Gone Wild", nobody would give two *****. But the fact is, at 55, people expect you to release music with more substance. Is that ageist? I guess so...

Imagine if Madonna released an album a la Ray of Light a couple years ago. Maybe not as good but dealt with the same subject matters. Or even a more mature dance album like COADF. Nobody would be deriding her for being 55. In fact people would be praising her for being 55 and still kicking ass.

She has plenty of respect from the new generation of musicians. Literally any new generation pop girl you can name and even some alternatives name her as an influence. If you want to talk about Respect than Janet is not a legend since I never hear her name unless a nipple joke is necesary, I only knew about her cuz new pop stars of my childhood like Britney kept mentioning her as an influence so I looked her up. Same for Michale since before he died only the new generation like Usher and Chris Brown and respected him but to the GP he was a washed up pedophile joke. Whitney was a crack joke before she died and now Madonna is a joke for being a washed up pop star who doesn't act her age but again the respect and influence on the new generation of pop stars is present.
