What it shouldn't be is a word in which black people have control over and can pick and choose when the word is offensive and when it is not. The n-word has been widely accepted by the black community and views vary on the use of it by white people. Wrong on many levels but whatever.

The n-word is disgusting, ill-mannered, offensive and rude. No one should use it. I don't care if you're black, white, orange or turquoise. I've had to accept that the black community, especially rappers, can and will use the word as and when they please. I've accepted this, despite not quite understanding why the said community would want to hear such a vile word, let alone use it. I doubt anyone who was involved in the treatment of blacks in the 50s would utter the n-word without shuddering.

Louis Tomlinson is not the problem here. You told him it was okay to use the n-word (ending in 'a'). Deal with it.

Lord. White people want everything. Just accept the fact that it's not okay for anybody besides black people to use that word.

Word reclamation can only be done by the victims of the word itself, white people can't decide to start using the word again but just in a different way because it's still an offensive word.

If one day black people are no longer offended by the word and the meaning has completely changed then it will be fine to use it but I don't see that happening any time soon, if ever.

I personally feel it's all about context. It's how the word is used and what it's intent was. If you say the n-word three times at your computer right now, with no context and no one around to hear you, it's just a sound that's coming out of your mouth. Say "farble" or "piggle" or "sharntip" - none of those are actually words. They have no meaning. They're just sounds you're making with your mouth. But if there were people on this planet who naturally grew green hair, and it was really offensive to call them "farbles" and you called them that in a vitriolic, insulting tone, then that word would instantly have meaning behind your use of it, and it would hurt them.

If you're standing in front of a black person screaming "YOU ****ING N****" and are screaming really offensive things at them about black history or black stereotypes, then it's completely different to someone singing "and if a ***** get attitude, pop it like it's hot, pop it like it's hot" while driving in their car.

What sort of crass logic? If you even attempted to say the word here in South London, I'm sure most black people will be really offended by it. The word is still pretty much offensive to lots and just because the black people in Miami don't get offended doesn't mean it represents how the entire black population feels about the word.
