X-Men was promoted relentlessly through literally nearly every avenue, for months on end. It also featured the return of Halle Berry + Anna Paquin to an X-Men film in nearly a decade (in whatever capacity), Fassbender (who I believe is steadily picking up steam in Hollywood), and Hugh Jackman, to cap it all off.
Not trying to discount Lawrence's appeal, but aren't Marvel films usually always guaranteed success, anyway?
