Is it 128 colors or 256 colors? 256 colors usually gives best results, however the file size is increased. Also, if there's a lot of changes between frames the file size will increase. This gif, for example, is short because it needed to be below 5 megabytes.
If the gif has minimal color changes between frames you could make it longer, example:
See how most of the gif has a black background? That's minimal change, and that's why the gif itself is long like that. It's also below 5 megabytes.
tl : dr - You may want to make your gif centered around a single scene so that the color changes will be minimal.
