I think it's more a case of changing her look and sticking with it. Leave it long enough for people to even notice.

I agree on both points.
As a fan, I'd love to hear her go alt-pop-rock. Maybe even with a disco vibe if they can make that work. Big vocals, raw emotions, reflective lyrics, throwback sound and fresh approach. Style it with 70s imagery and pre-Fame Gaga glam.
