why would Toxic have flopped with Kylie? It was the perfect sound for her after the success of CGYOOMH.

Slow was too risky as a lead single, it backfired (at least in the US). It was a hit in Europe and Australia but so were most of Kylie's songs between 2001-2005 there. Toxic would have been a hit by Kylie's standards in the US too.

It was written and produced by Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Billboard, with additional writing by Bonnie McKee. Luke explained that he wanted "Hold It Against Me" to sound unlike his previous productions. The song was originally offered to Katy Perry, but Luke and Martin felt that it did not suit her.

Slow is my jam and one of her best but it indeed would've worked out better as 2nd or 3rd single. Red Blooded Woman was the obvious lead single choice and screams smash. Anyway, it's still standing in my shelf looking like a whole damn album.
