He worked with Kat Deluna before Gaga tho, that means nothing. Besides thanks to his production skills he gave Gaga a grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the only grammy she has for one of her songs!

But in all seriousness, it really was the video + lyrics + timing of the release. Especially after her Alejandro music video where she swallowed rosemary beads.. It was bad timing, but I think together they could definitely make some forward-thinking music.
