Because the grade boundaries are so low we're expected to get C or above. But if you get an E you can still go on to the second year

but aren't the classes way harder in the UK? i thought that's why the grading scale was different. it's nearly impossible to get a score in the 90s... it's like they use curved grades in every class.

I haven't done a class in America so I can't compare, but the exams are quite difficult, especially in maths and the sciences.
But one of my cousins did get 100% in his politics exam, so it's not impossible
