A lot of the people in these countries actually liked the song, just didn't like her.

There are gay people voting in those countries too. Not to mention, I think people who are watching Eurovision are probably more open minded about a lady with a beard, than the homophobes in those countries (who probably aren't even watching Eurovision). An act like Conchita couldn't be more appropriate for Eurovision and the reason why she won was because it was the total package. Sure, the beard can be seen as a gimmick, but supported with a decent song and good performance is what made it a winner. She clearly didn't win because of her song only because iTunes clearly shows The Common Linnets are being favourited as the best song. Yet their act wasn't as memorable (though pretty great too) as Conchita, which is why she won and they didn't.
