Cats try and avoid fighting if at all possible but they find it hard to back down from a confrontation. This is because they are solitary animals Getting into a fight is a bad idea because if they get injured they can't rely on a group for protection. It's almost impossible for them to turn their backs on a hostile cat in a confrontation though so they just have these stand offs and shriek at each other.
Ofc females make similar shrieking noises when they are in heat, although it's usually more wailing and less screaming,
