Most people will throw it all out. The Born This Way Ball there were tents literally just left by an underpass
the homeless people ALWAYS show up to events so they know people will give money/food from waiting in line.

A lot of times you can always be friendly with people and just go 'hey I'm going to the bathroom, will you hold my spot?' or if you have a friend you don't even have to worry about it.

The only GA event I've ever done where we got numbers was for the BTWB and The Mrs. Carter Show and only for the early entry VIP upgrade. Normally you just hold your place all day. Once you're in you take that chance to go to the bathroom one last time and then hold it until the end of the show.
As long as you're not a dick about it and get there somewhat early (before noon-ish), you can be as close as you want.
