The issue isn't that I can't sharpen, it's that when I convert the gif to smart filter this happens:



It just becomes one static image/layer.

Yes. If the gif is already made you will need to export it as video.

Once you have it as video use Filter > Convert to smart filter.

Then any filter you apply (including sharpen) will effect every frame of the gif. You can even select certain areas of the gif to get sharpened.

You have an already processed gif.

You can only use smart filters either with the original video, OR you need to export the gif as a video and then use it.

I just tried with an original video and it did the same thing.

Import > Video Frames to Layers > chose my times > highlighted all the layers/frames > Filter > Convert for Smart Filter

What am I doing wrong?

Ok. I hope this is the same as it is in PS CC. What are you using? Cs5?

Do NOT import it using that method. Just open the video file using Photoshop.

I only make gifs avs like once a month, so it's not that bad.

I could ""buy""" a more advanced version but I cba; the less space it takes up the better.
