The difference between Drunk in Love and Dark Horse is that one was available before the album's release, and the other was released a week after the album was released.

Had Drunk in Love/XO gotten released and available to purchase as Individual singles, normally like before, the album sales would be less, and the singles would sell MUCH more.

Drunk in Love was still a top 2 hit.
BEYONCÉ has still sold 1.9M
BEYONCÉ is still sitting in the top 25 of iTunes despite being more than double the price of Artpop, Shakira and Prism

The single being released after the album was released means nothing. If it was like that, 3rd singles would never sell well. Set Fire to The Rain, per example, sold about 5 millions in the US only and was her 3rd single. Stop with the excuses.

It still explains why the single isn't 2x Platinum. The first week sales of DrIL was like 60K or something like that because people were still buying THE ALBUM.

The fact that you have to compare BEYONCÉ to 21 should show you what a monster the album is.

Drunk in Planet Hollywood was released after 1 million people bought the album but even so it would still mean that DIL would have peaked at 2.2 million at best, assuming all 1 million who bought the album loved the song instead of using other songs from the album and not using that one. Still not smash hit numbers no matter how you look at it.
