That's how radio stations test the music they play. They conduct phone surveys.
They call a different everytime sample of people in their area and based on what their target audience wants to hear, they build their playlists. In regards to POP radio, it's all about females 18-34 years old.
There are several companies that conduct call out surveys. Sometimes the radio stations do the surveys themselves or just pay a company to conduct a survey for them.
Every Friday we get some call out numbers by Mediabase and Critical Mass Media. But those are national numbers and they do not provide a lot of information since they are free to the public.
Radio stations care about local results, not national. But, generally, trends are the same everywhere so the free scores we get gives us an idea. However, what might work in LA which is very latino might not work in Minneapolis which is a very white metropolis.
