I mean you are certainly entitled to your own opinion about the song, but one must be aware of a few things.
1. He absolutely needs to heighten his US airplay to keep going up in the biz. JT is a top male artist whose sound is and has been popular here for a number of years. He knows it appeals to the people, and by replicating that sound on just one of his songs in his own work he is too. Musicians do that all of the time.
2. Let's be honest, the vast majority has not heard Like I Love You. But would it really matter if they did? I really don't think that this is a Roar/Brave situation. The song may sound similar to you, but personally I'm not hearing much more that a similar style. Think of all the songs with aspects that sound a lot more alike then these two. (Shoutout to RT for ichi) 1R's Secrets instrumental sounds a heck of a lot like SLY's, as well as HG's sounds a lot like Don't Stop Believin'...yet I'm assuming you don't give equal treatment and go around saying she "played a bad joke" by releasing them? What about Halo and Already Gone? Put Your Hearts up (Ariana Grande) and What's Up?
3. He's going for an early/mid summer release this time around. Something like The A Team or Lego House simply would not work as a single in this time of year, it's not an "up" enough song. That's not to say that anything on his album that's surely more in tune with his older style won't be released, but maybe August or the fall would be a better fit for something like that.
And what was so wrong with his US visit? Just done some radios and performed a few songs on SNL. Typical promotion...
