ROUND NINE

1. Adele Addict - Avril Lavigne - Avril Lavigne: Bad Girl (feat. Marilyn Manson)

For Round 9, I chose "Bad Girl" as my song that I want to be a single. Not only is it one of the album's strongest tracks, but it could also be a huge commercial success for her. The fiercely provocative rock track, which features vocals from Marilyn Manson, is something very different from Lavigne's typical style – a quality that may help to broaden her discography & appeal to more audiences, if the track were to be released as a single. The song's suggestive lyrics also appeal to today's generation, which seems to have been consumed in sexualized music. The song combines her typical grit with metal influences to create "glorious chaos" (according to Billboard). From the opening line, Manson & Lavigne not only hook the listener, but want them craving more. Despite the album's prominent pop influence, "Bad Girl" shifts into a new genre for Lavigne, & it truly is "glorious chaos".

A great addition to the "American Life" theme and bizarre-yet-Poppy instrumental in its time, "Nobody Knows Me" would have served as an excellent fifth single from "American Life" for a few reasons.
(1) No Madonna singles sound like it - it was fresh.
(2) It seemed to be a toned down "American Life" (which liquidated her US audience).
(3) It would've slayed with a music video. The era's other music videos ("Hollywood", "Love Profusion") were very promising additions to Madonna's videography, and this song could have followed suit and had lots of potential video concepts.
(4) It appeared in both her 2004 Re-Invention Tour and 2012 MDNA Tour - lots of promo!
(5) The song's statement about television and the media was a very good one, one that hasn't been seen in another Madonna song to the same degree - in 2003, that could've clicked with the GP.
(6) The song was a promo single and performed successfully, hitting Top 5 on the US Dance Charts (becoming the #2 Dance song of the entire year on Billboard) and even notching a position on the Australian Dance Charts... it had potential!
In an era of flop singles, this song could have done a bit more. Saying 'nobody knows me' as one of the biggest celebrities in the world could possibly turn a head or two, no? |

3. igor - Britney Spears - Britney Jean: Alien

Everyone knows that Britney wanted to show a more personal side of her with this album, so Alien would be an amazing single choice, it represents exactly what Britney Jean is about, sonically and lyrically. Since it's an intimate album, I think Britney needs to stay true to herself while choosing the singles, and she's already said Alien is one of her favorite songs of the album and that she wants it to become a single, she also said on her documentary I Am Britney Jean she needed to bring it to life on her Vegas show. On a commercial point of view, Alien is clearly one of the stronger tracks on Britney Jean, definitely a fan favorite, and has received great reviews from the critics and general public. I think it would do well on the charts, radios are more open to slow and midtempos nowadays (i.e. Story Of My Life, Say Something, Not A Bad Thing, Just Give Me A Reason, Royals, Team), not to mention it has a catchy chorus ("not alone, not alone, not alone..."), which is a important thing for a song to be a hit.

4. Chill Bill - Gotye - Making Mirrors: Bronte

While many of the songs on Making Mirrors deal with complex introspective themes, ‘Bronte’ is just a simple ballad about saying goodbye to a friend. It’s a common subject to be sure, but Gotye’s writing is still as powerful and resonant as ever (seriously, I still get goose bumps when I hear, “and your voice still echoes in the hall of this house”). Its simplistic yet powerful lyrics give it the broadest possible appeal, which is an essential quality for any pop single. It’s a song for anyone who’s ever had a loved one move to a different state, or get drafted, or pass away. Furthermore, its universality doesn’t come at the expense of personality. It fits neatly into the contemporary pop scene, but with its tranquil atmosphere and ghostly vocals, it’s unmistakably a Gotye song. By releasing Bronte as a single, Gotye enables himself to reach out to a broad audience while still maintaining his unique identity as an artist.

Why the saddest, most PERSONAL song off the album? Let's be honest, the song would more then likely NOT do anything for her on the charts. But then again, NONE of her other singles charted well on the charts, so why would she really care about how radio friendly the song is? I feel as though MANY people could relate to the song just on the powerful lyrics alone., even if the lyrics are REALLY personal (which the general public tends not to always "get") People could still relate to the song because everyone has had those "sticks and stones" thrown at them at one time or another. It's an empowering song that could help many find the courage or confidence that they may need to accept themselves for who they are, not what everyone wants them to be.

6. Penk - Janelle Monáe - The Electric Lady: Electric Lady

For this round I decided to choose the title track again, "Electric Lady". The uptempo funk jam is one of the most obvious single choices on the album, with a killer chorus that will never leave your mind, and an overall feel good vibe to it (similar in ways to Happy) that I think would do fantastic on the charts! Another reason why I think it would do well is because funk inspired songs have been pretty "in" lately, and this would fit right in on the radio. Janelle usually performs it at every show, so she knows its potential too, and will hopefully be smart enough to make this the next single. She has never been able to really breakthrough commercially, so this song would be a perfect opportunity to do that. I must say, It would be pretty awesome to go down the street and hear someone humming this song in the near future. Either way, I know I will still be "getting way down" to this song if it's a single or not.

Wonderful Life would've been the perfect closing single from The Sweet Escape. It's a heartwrenching, mature ballad about the loss of a loved one. It's moderately catchy, the production is radio-friendly, and Gwen sounds amazing. The single would've shown a deep maturity the public had not previously seen from Gwen. WL would have also been Gwen's last solo single, and the song has the perfect farewell message for Gwen. |

I think this was the hardest round yet because I honestly loved all of the entries this round. There wasn't a single bad one. Great song choices, great essays, it was very hard to vote this round. Everyone did a great job!

Some of them are very great essays, but i need to judge this based on both the song choice factor and the essay to decide whether or not it should be a single.
OFF:
Gotye (the song is too personal/emotional to be a single, too different from what Gotye released form his first album, when an artist shouldn't send out risky follow-up single choices)
Avril (hmm, the song genre is a problem here, I totally think oppositely with you. It's more Rock than Pop, and I'd think that it'd diverge her loyal pop fans even more. It could introduce her to other audience, but it's really hard for her at this stage. This is just my personal opinion. In another side, I like this song, just don't think that it should be a single)
SAVE:
Janelle Monae (perfect combination of song choice & essay)
Runner-up: Madonna (good combination too, but not too much a fan of this song)

Fair enough, at least you have a legit reason for voting me off. I was debating between "Bad Girl" and "17". I want both to be singles, but I opted to do "Bad Girl" because I thought the reasoning was better and I just thought it was something that might surprise people and give them a different view on the song and why I chose it. You know what I mean? But at the same time, I think that if she released a song like that, it would only do so much for her commercially.

Gotye (This song would flop. It's actually a pretty nice song but this song's sound reminds me of Adore You since neither songs really go anywhere musically. Say Something doesn't really anywhere either and the only reason that song smashed was because of Xtina. As for this song, it probably would be a bubbling under peak considering Gotye never tried to actually breakout into the US).
Madonna (I don't see how this song would have turned things around for her that era when the autotune is really annoying and the chorus is nothing memorable. )
Close Call: Janelle Monae (The only place I see this song doing well is the Hip Hop/R&B charts. No one cares for Solange and the song just drags on) Avril (you should have gone with 17) & Britney (Passenger would have been a better choice).

Avril & Britney were a bit disappointing this round. I would have gone with 17 for Avril. And igor, I can't take you seriously when you say "It's a fan favorite" as to why it should be released as a single, because fans also voted for Criminal and look how that turned out.

Being a fan favorite was not the only reason I said as to why it should be a single, it's also Britney's favorite song and the general public received it well. People tend to think only uptempos can do well on the charts, but a lot of slow songs are dominating the charts right now. I was torn between Alien, Passenger and Til It's Gone, but decided to go with my favorite of the album.

Thanks for the vote, Collin! And yeah, I really regret not picking "17" now because I knew that was the obvious single choice. I went with "Bad Girl" because I didn't want to do something that was going to be expected. I wanted to be different and really wow people. Hopefully that doesn't lead to my elimination.
