Here's the thing, it WASN'T. Bey dropped a surprise album. Bey got terrific sales. Bey succeeded.
Shakira had a hit single, a commercial which was played 4399438 times in three months, and starring role on one of the biggest television shows.
And the "What If" scheme wouldn't work, because Bey would open big regardless. She had Superbowl, a world tour, and her name in the media around the clock. She was opening huge regardless, she was just SMART and maximized sales.
