I'm not really lying, sorry to sound harsh. The vast majority of the black americans here and elsewhere only listened to R&B and Rap/Hip-Hop for the most part of their lives. So they see the artists in those genres as their icons. Then they downplay the importance of other artists from other genres simply because they are very aware of their success and impact, which most of the time happens to be much bigger than the ones they know and love.
