Gaga is still trapped in 2009. Rihanna and Katy survived because they did what anyone who wants to top the charts would do: make current top 40 music people want to listen to. ARTPOP isn't indie ( or is it ) and it caters to top 40 from like five years ago.

Exactly the problem. It's not modern enough to be mainstream, nor is does it show enough ingenuity for it to be abstract.
Being obsessed with Katy's sales above everything else in life isn't either. Poor Kats!

I couldn't have said it better. ARTPOP is behind the curve for today's music climate, but it isn't progressive enough to merit any credibility as an album allegedly meant to bring 'art' and 'pop' together.
