ROUND EIGHT

1. Adele Addict - Avril Lavigne - Avril Lavigne: Here's To Never Growing Up

Since her debut, Avril has had a reputation for expressing her desire to be rebellious, free, & young at heart in her lyrics, & “Here’s to Never Growing Up” is no exception. On this track, Avril is just as rebellious as ever & plays it safe by staying in her comfort zone with the theme of refusing to grow up. Although this has become a prominent theme in her recent music, “Here’s to Never Growing Up” is one of her most artistry-defining songs. Avril has not only developed a rebellious image & artistry, but is proud of it & the fact that she's not what people want or expect her to be. "HTNGU" is Avril’s distinguishable sound at its finest & makes the listener aware that she just doesn’t care (“we don’t give a f**k”), & she’s “never gonna change”. Even though she is approaching her 30s, she’s still young at heart & has made it clear that she can be who she is & "can stay forever young".

One Direction rebels against Simon Cowell

The hottest boy band has finally gone wild and not follow what Simon Says. In their latest single 1D sings about getting out of control, not giving a **** what people say anymore. They're growing so fast, wanting to control their career, spending the money in silly things, even Liam that one said he wouldn't drink, now you can google him getting drunk as ***** and they almost curse in this song. Midnight memories is all about going for whatever comes in your mind, just do it, like I've been saying, just enjoy it while it lasts. There are three or more songs about partying but I decided to choose this one because the music is rockier, it makes it naughtier. The boys next door are badder than you think and Simon will fume when they release their Blackout.

The whole message in Ashlee's song "Shadow" is about her relationship with her sister Jessica and her parents. Before she became famous, Jessica Simpson was a huge star and due to this, Ashlee felt that she wasn't as important as her. The inner demons told her that she wasn't needed and that nobody in the family loved her. This whole song, and especially these lyrics, rebels against these inner demons as she realizes that she really does have value. On top of this, she discovers that both of them actually have significant differences so that neither are stuck in each other's shadow. This track also rebels against the general public, as they were already judging Ashlee prior to having any music out. Back in the day, they were already comparing her to Jessica in any way possible while also pitting them together and making it some family rivalry. This only added fuel to the fire, and also made these lyrics even more prominent. These three lines show that she no longer has to live in denial and depression, and also refuses to do so any longer.

Madonna / American Life / Round Eight
American Life
"I'd like to express my extreme point of view; I'm not Christian, & I'm not a Jew
I'm just living out the American dream, & I just realized that nothing is what it seems"
Madonna is no stranger to rebellion and testing the boundaries, and her song American Life is a prime example. Among an album that consistently rebels against American culture from start to finish, the title track is the most impressive instance of Madonna's rebellion. Throughout the song, Madonna satirically comments on pop culture and the "American Dream", slipping in all the things that Americans love and are ever-so intrigued with. It's not until the end of her weave-snatching rap verse that the satire is brought full circle to anger. The song, jam-packed with underlying criticism on America, sets up the album's tone as well, paving the way for other songs that also nitpick on parts of American culture (i.e. "Nobody Knows Me", "Hollywood"). The music video as well is one of the most controversial and rebellious statements made by any musician, comparing war to fashion and much more. |

This quote couldn't be more clear, Work Bitch is against laziness, people who want to get on top without doing any effort, something very common nowadays. This song is also Britney's response to those who keep saying she doesn't deserve to be this successful and have everything she has. She's saying she worked hard throughout her life to be where she is right now, and if you're jealous and want to live fancy in a big mansion, party in France, have a Bugatti and look hot in a bikini, you better stop complaining about her and get to work bitch! Nothing in life come easy, and it wasn't different for her.

6. Chill Bill - Gotye - Making Mirrors: State Of The Art

‘State of the Art’ recounts Gotye’s memories of the Cotillion synthesizer organ that his parents bought for the family when he was young. On a deeper level, however, it’s a harsh criticism of the dehumanizing effect of our love affair with technology and our consumer culture. This is best represented in the last verse: “Now we don’t want to go out / when we could spend the night at home with the Cotillion”. When his family fell to the seductive lure of the Cotillion, they let it isolate them from the outside world and forsake human interaction in its favor. In this manner, ‘State of the Art’ serves as a cautionary tale. In a world where technology plays a bigger role in our lives than ever before, Gotye warns us not to fall into the same trap that his family; and by extension, his generation; did.

Rebeling against: The Media
Although being part of one of Britian's BIGGEST Girl Groups in the 21st century, Nicola wasnt always living the dream. Nicola always seems to be singled out by the media for either her red hair, pale skin, or what seem to be a more "moody" composure, compared to the other 4 girls who had more of that pop star look than Nicola. And for years she really never fought back against it.
"You push and push and push, pushed me to fight, Everybody's got a limit alright So put 'em up, put 'em up, take a bite"
She'd had enough of staying silent and lets the media know that she's now not afraid to push back and fight. She's the better person now. She's comfortable with herself. By coming out with a makeup line for pale skin girls, to writing this album and speaking her mid and showing HER confidence, Nicola has now stayed true herself and plays by her own rules, and if she's pushed, she will fight back!

8. Penk - Janelle Monáe - The Electric Lady: Q.U.E.E.N. (feat. Erykah Badu)

The song I chose for this round is, once again, "Q.U.E.E.N.". In the song, Janelle is rebelling against quite a variety of things. For one, she is rebelling against the people who try to bring her down, the people who are criticizing her every move, criticizing her ambiguity about her sexuality, and criticizing the things she wears. She is rebelling against those who try to put her and her music in a single category, and those who stereotype her as just an "R&B singer" (which would be highly inaccurate since she has handled more genres that I can count on my fingers and toes). She is rebelling against racism, sexism, and homophobia, too. Overall, the one thing Janelle is really rebelling against in the song is those who stop you from being you. She really gets her point through in the last minute of the song when she breaks out a rap and asks a series of rhetorical questions. The one line that really stands out to me is the closing line, "Electric ladies, will you sleep? Or will you preach?" This line sums up the overall message of the song, and is asking whether you will just ignore the problems we face, or will we stand up and take action against them. Be yourself, and don't let anybody else stop you from being you.

"Don't Get It Twisted"
Before I start, let me clarify just how little rebellion is on The Sweet Escape. I did the best that I could. Anyway, Don't Get It Twisted is a song discussing Gwen's emotions and feelings while being pregnant, so, in a way, she's rebelling against the pregnancy norms. Gwen's anger and frustration is displayed when she questions "what's a matter with me?" because she's "acting really odd" as she had no idea of her pregnancy. I understand this is sort of a stretch, but when reviewing the lyrics, Gwen is subtly shown rebelling against the idea of her being pregnant. |

This was a very tough round as far as voting goes. I loved all of the entries. Honestly, it made me lose a lot of confidence in my entry (which should've been easy for me, I mean, for crying out loud, it's Avril Lavigne). The entries this round were really good! It's going to be an interesting round!

You know, a while ago there was this wrestling forum I went to, and there was this barely literate poster who was OBSESSED with Girls Aloud. I remember him saying something along the lines of, "omg they're so HOT I would do all of them except for the ginger one".
Now I guess I know who he was talking about.
I don't know why I still remember this guy after all these years, but your entry made me think of him.
Anyway, onto my rates...
