I feel like it could have been a big hip-hop event (and maybe it was idk), but the pop influence on the album turned away people within the deeper part of the hip-hop community and then My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released that week.
Willy can tell you more. I think he's posted about the original reactions to PF before.

A LOT of people were expecting an album full of "Bottoms Ups & Monsters", or more appropriately an album full of DIOEs and RRs. I used to lurk here for a long ass time before joining and even when Right Thru Me premiered, a lot of people were wondering why it sounded so poppy and why she didn't have that one Hip-Hop banger yet. That tone was also felt on the Hip-Hop blogs, but it didn't really matter because she was also simultaneously giving those tracks via features.
Anyway, when Pink Friday came out, a lot of the Rap fans were disappointed because they felt the album was way too fluffy (which it is, but that's the allure of it all). They felt the production was too light and there wasn't enough hard tracks.
However, Pink Friday was an event. It was also a Pop event, on the lowkey side. A lot of Pop fans were anticipating the album because they liked her features and mainly because they were attracted to her aesthetic and personality.
But yes, Hip-Hop heads weren't messing with it, but again, that didn't matter at all. Not to mention MBDTF also came out that same week, which supplemented for the album.
