"American Life" was the least time Madonna was TRULY relevant (at least in the US).
Now before you say, "But COADF!!!! Hung Up was #1 in 193 countries!!!". Think about it, when was the last time Madonna got everybody talking? And no the Superbowl DOESN'T count! We all know it was 2003/2004 with the whole controversy over AL and that VMA performance. The controversy of AL was so big that radio here didn't touch "Hung Up". I remember there being a petition being spread online to end the boycott because "Sorry" flopped here.
Madonna was hella relevant everywhere except the US in 2005/2006. I don't think you comprehend how massive Hung Up was. That **** was a virus, it was EVERYWHERE. Even in the States it pushed Confessions to sell 3x more than American Life and outsold the #1 hit of that year "We Belong Together".

true, true.
but I feel like in the US, Madonna was just more...out there during the AL era? Like, she was talked about and featured in the media a lot more. Probably because of the whole controversy around it.
despite COADF's success, it wasn't the same. The rest of the world disagrees though lol
And teens made countless movies iconic in the 80s/90s.
Drugstore Cowboy, Say Anything, Footloose, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Goonies, Stand By Me, Back to the Future, Risky Business, Sixteen Candles, etc.
