They're both creative, but I'd say Gaga just kinda pushes it to a really weird and awkward limit where Katy doesn't. She knows balance and composure.

And the thing with basic pop music is, it has many lovers (which takes it to top 10) but that's not representative for many other people who mostly dislike the song. Songs like Roar were loved by many kids but MANY people hated it too, and they hate it for a reason, not just because it's Katy Perry (well sometimes they do but still).

Basic is a stupid word and I've never heard a clearcut definition. Generic is a neutral term that can be good or bad. Examples of horrible generic music: anything on Britney Jean or ARTPOP, their sales reflect this. If the music is bad, the public wont buy. Examples of good generic music: Roar. It was current & fresh yet catchy enough to distinguish itself.

There are tons of GENERIC artists that hide behind or allude so-called "innovation" now btw, such as Lady Gaga or Marina and the Diamonds, for example.

Generic sells really well , and since it's been done before it acts as sort of a bread and butter for an artist. Fans of the innovative artists will not respect the generic artists because in their eyes that artist has taken the easy route. Do you have proof that kids were the reason Roar had that massive success? Wasn't Roar number in Adult contemporary for like 4 months? And Song of the Year? I mean, it did very well for a kids song. Just because you hate it doesn't mean it's the general opinion of the world. Stop being basic.
