Caught this at a special test screening last night, was really won over by it, and let me just say: it can be a huge hit for the Weinsteins if they play their cards right, marketing-wise.
The first fifteen-twenty minutes or so, I was a little worried because Mark Ruffalo (who I love) seemed to be playing...I don't even know. Sitcom-y? Completely the antithesis of what I was expecting, being that this is much, much more "polished" than Once. However, after the film catches its stride, it finds itself an irresistible crowd-pleaser. All of the seats in the theatre were filled, and everyone seemed to be eating it up, sporadic applause breaking out here and there throughout the last quarter.
Keira kills it, very au naturale and lovely; her voice incredibly sweet and emotive. One thing that's for sure is the corresponding soundtrack that'll be released whenever the film is is going to be M-A-S-S-I-V-E. The songs are so of-the-moment, so lady Hansardian (I know he co-wrote a few alongside Gregg Alexander et al). I immediately wanted them on my iPod.
Some of the producers who produced it also backed Enough Said last year, and it really fills the same void in one's moviegoing wants/needs, as in its just super enjoyable and engaging and satisfying--though, of course, Holofcener's work is admittedly much more emotional.
Awards-wise, Knightley will assuredly be a top ten candidate Actress in a Comedy/Musical, Ruffalo as well. At least one of the original songs, whichever they end up campaigning will absolutely be nominated at the Oscars, full stop. That's not even a question.
Can't wait to see it again, whenever TWC decides to spring it upon the masses.
