It's got to be very frustrating for her because she blatantly only "regressed" because of how bemused people were by BTW. She can't win.
The problem she has now is that we know what Gaga is like/can achieve on optimum pop settings (TF/M) and also what she's like/can achieve when she dials up the "Gaga" (BTW). Everything inbetween is going to be seen as diluted, one way or the other.
Which is why she has to try something new and different, so it musically can't be measured by either standard. i.e. a stripped back album, a pop/rock album, a jazz album etc. She can revisit dance/pop when it comes back in style and she can wow a new generation.
