We only cared about her as a part of PCD because it was obvious how much she wanted to be a star, so that was entertaining to watch at least. No one wants to watch her unless she's struggling to keep her slaves in line
When it sinks in that BTB didn't yield a top 5 nor a Top 9 on Pop, it's kinda a flop. And the album didn't really sell extraordinary amounts, 1.7M in the US was very manageable back then for most pop stars.
Nelly, Shakira, Beyoncé, Gwen, Fergie, Avril, were all bigger that year. And Britney was on every headline so yeah.
