Yup.
I thought BTW would have been enough of a wake up call, but in hindsight...BTW was still a huge success despite the negativity, so it's no wonder they didn't crack down. They probably thought that she just needed to lighten up, be more pop and people would love her again. They obviously weren't too concerned if they didn't insist on hitmakers/collabs bar last minute (probably post-Applause) additions.
Now is a different story. The past 8 months has been eye opening for her, her team and her label. Due to ARTPOP's underperformance, the messiness of the campaign and the success of her peers...they should have learnt a lot. There's no way she isn't getting competitive right now, and I'd be very surprised if her label aren't tightening things up and supporting her as much as possible.
I think the biggest lessons have been:
1. Complacency - they were very complacent and occasionally smug with the music and her profile. I bet she thought she knew exactly how to play it and what the masses would eat up.
2. Efficiency - her team needs to be a well oiled machine in order to compete. This isn't the amateur leagues - she's playing with the pros. They HAVE to step it up. You can't just grind to a halt and fall apart. Even if it was out of her control - her label should have rescued.
3. Awareness - whilst we can't pull the classic "no promo" excuse, it's obvious that they downscaled compared to BTW(/Prism) and they didn't up the ante when things struggled. That's poor promotion.
4. Response - she got away with her ARTPOP malarky before because she still had the novelty factor. That's gone. When phenomenons die down, you have to then play by the same rules as everyone else...and that's that people simply want catchy, fresh pop delivered with entertaining visuals. If you try and force anything else down their throats, they'll close their mouths. The only way to get something 'deeper' to them is to disguise it. You need enough POP to help the medicine (ART) go down.
