Sometimes I wonder how Gravity would have turned out with Angelina Jolie as originally planned.
Would she have won the Oscar against Cate?
Not as good.
Angelina Jolie is too beautiful, her features are too feminine. Part of Gravity's thematic success relies directly upon the androgyny of Ryan Stone. Ryan is meant to act as the embodiment of humanity. Ryan is only gendered once by Dr. Kowalski, and the argument can be made that the gendering was an act of faith on Matt's part that she's a life giver and therefore able to survive the journey.
Those are a dime a dozen though. I love that Beautiful Liar is all about abolishing the "homewrecker" role that women apply to each other (a sexist label for the record).
Also the production is so good, I have it on repeat rn.
And as Shapes said, that was the entire point. Cuarón uses the entire human race as a major theme in both 'Gravity' and (the superior) 'Children of Men.'
