The lowdown: Reminiscing about the allure and the isolation of life on the road, “Gypsy” begins as a Billy Joel-style story song before unleashing an irresistible, arena-filling dance-pop anthem. It probably could have been stronger lyrically if Gaga had filtered the theme through her own experience, and the final globe-trotting stanza, while catchy, is a bit pandering. But who cares when it feels this good? “Gypsy” one of ARTPOP’s most beloved tracks, earning the second-highest number of 10’s outside the top ten.
ATRL says...: "Gypsy" was a surprisingly divisive song. lovesong was a fan, calling it "sweet and one of the better pop moments of the album." adrianbeane loved the "Cher/Kylie glittery gay niche" vibe. AriNikoBradshaw thought it was the "best-produced and -written song on the album sans 'Do What U Want." Edge of Glory wrote, "The energetic and euphoric vibe of the song takes me back to the good moments of 'Hair' and 'The Edge Of Glory.' A true pop anthem with soaring and sweet vocals that make you feel her passion."
bluth disagreed, laughing that "somewhere 'The Edge of Glory' is sipping from a tea cup making derogatory comments about this song." JakeKills said, "I struggle to take this song seriously because of its cheesy soundtrack-lite production and unforgettably embarrassing live performances." Penk snarked, "Oh, poor Gaga! She has to travel all over the world to beautiful locations and has to be all alone in her lavish hotel room, crying all over her $800 dress while eating filet mignon with truffle sauce and caviar. Gypsy life must be so difficult for her, the poor thing!" J. YONCÉ fumed that it was "legitimately the worst thing Gaga has EVER made, released or unreleased. One of the most vile pieces of trash I've ever heard in my life. I still can't make it through one listen of the song in full."
Best bit: the racing post-chorus "'Cause I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm/A gypsy, gypsy, gypsy, I'm"
