Paula Abdul could dance and choreograph and had hot videos and hit songs. She wasn't the best singer but neither is Katy Perry. But if she's the new Paula, then wouldn't that be an argument in favor of Katy still being relevant 20 years into her career? Paula definitely was, it's called American Idol. So maybe Katy too well fade but maintain enough goodwill in the industry that she can be a star again.

I can't believe I'm arguing for Katy Perry's longevity, let me go to bed..

You have much more of a chance to stay a long time relevant if you make Soul - Aretha (Adele), Country - Dolly Parton (Taylor Swift) or Indie - Björk (Lorde)

So far Katy hasn't had a song that I can see future generations cover as being one of their inspirations growing up. Even now, at the top of her game, Katy is not seen as a great musician or singer that other young aspiring artists look up to. She releases fun poppy summer hits but when she tries to get serious, she achieves little success compared to her other fun singles.

Why not? She has already proven her longevity. "Firework" is one hell of a classic and is still charting everywhere.

You guys need to realize that longevity depends on the material and the way she handles her career. If she doesn't make many DUMB career moves and only releases good music I don't see why she wouldn't last song. She's already lasted more than1/4 that and is not slowing down.

Imo she should follow ABBA's footsteps if she wants to last. Personally I don't like boring, generic corny ballads so that's definitely not the route I wanna see her taking.
