I found it interesting how tumblr has embraced Lupita's "no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid" speech while ignoring the fact Lupita comes from an incredibly wealthy family (one of the richest and most powerful in all of Africa) and got the part because she went to YALE. It's not like most little girls from Africa will have access to those kinds of opportunities, and just shows you how much privilege you have to have been born with for Hollywood to accept you into its fairy tale narrative if you are indeed a black girl from Africa.

I was talking about how social justice tumblr has embraced her as a beacon of opportunity for ALL black women out there while ignoring that her upper class status and wealth were the things that allowed her to show her talent and achieve her success.

She is still obviously hugely talented and a deserving winner And being a dark skinned black woman it's still an incredible achievement and she had to be 10x better than 99% of the other white girls to do what she's done
