'Racism', the term, is just a word. On its own it is meaningless, just like any word that is a collection of random letters. What it is used to represent, however, is what matters.
Racism, in the sense that I am using it, refers to the systematic oppression of a group of people based on their race and ethnicity, which is what happens to people of colour around the world (not only in countries with a predominantly white population, mind you, as the effects of colonialism were far-reaching and are still very much present today...just take a look at Latin America, where in every country the top 10% earners are significantly more European and white than the bottom 10%).
Racism, in the sense that you are using it, refers to saying something mean about someone related to their race, even if it has no real life consequences and doesn't do anything negative in the world, like, for example, saying white people usually age horribly (which is true).
The two things are NOT the same and by using 'racism' to describe them both you equate them and erase the systematic oppression (through government, media, distribution of wealth, access to education, living standards, etc) that people of colour face, particularly black, native and Amerindian (aka what most people call 'Latino', which is not actually a race) people.
