Actually, in the context where the United States president issues a statement in which they denounce the invasive acts and attack to Ukrainian sovereignty, I'm pretty sure they didn't just send him home to discuss moving forward...
When the biggest world power speaks against and aggressive country, you don't take it lightly, especially in the case of Canada where political and military ties are extremely strong between both countries. Also, Ukraine pleaded to the UN to stop Russia. I highly doubt this is a formality.
It is literally against the Geneva convention to invade and threaten a country's sovereignty. I'm sure no actions will be taken at this present moment, but the UN and Canada for that matter are not going to pull the same mistake that the League of Nations failed to do in the eve of WW2.
(Fun fact I'm a Poli Sci Major too, doesn't mean anything the current political atmosphere is hardly comparable to that of previous global conflicts)
