I'm not one to take away ones love or devotion for an artist or release, because I'd hate for someone to do that to me, but do you think there could also be too high standards for 2NE1 to the point they're put on this pedestal and unfairly rated better than everyone else?
I know and respect peoples opinions and how it's different for everyone but I can think of a few releases that are up there for me, in and out of K-pop, but would get completely brushed over. While I'm not saying you or anyone here is guilty of this - but I think there can be a huge... misunderstanding (?) of how quality comes across when huge power is thrown into the equation.
Absolutely. I do think that sometimes people praise 2NE1, or really any act on that pedestal, just for being insert act here, but that kind of thinking doesn't spring from nowhere. In order for perception of them to get to that level they do at some point actually have to be on that level, so I think in that way, it's slightly justified. It's no secret though that hugely popular acts are often more carefully examined and praised/degraded than smaller acts, even if the quality is drastically polar between them.
Ya'll are tripping. Those songs are leagues above the average music released by (MOST) girlgroups. The only ones who could rival it are maybe BEG? In fact I think it's telling that the most K-Pop sounding track (Happy) also happens to be the one that's slated the most. I read somewhere that this isn't even K-Pop, it's more like R&B which I would have to agree with in a way. It's definitely not the run of the mill quality you expect to find on 1theK's channel. That's not saying pop = basic only, it's more that the album definitely is inspired more by hip-hop/reggae/R&B and less the electro pop of say, I Am The Best.
Not only did they elevate their sound, but they basically did a genre that not many girlgroups touch. I can only give them acclaim for Crush. It isn't perfect, but it was definitely worth the wait in my eyes/ears
Totally agree with you about that - she's one of the most important voices in the group. Her chorus on Goodbye makes me melt. I just went off on a tangent a bit cause I'm a vocal nut. Technically she's not very good but she's still one of their fundamental voices.
OT but I think Tiffany as a vocalist is definitely misunderstood. She has one of those voices where you think she's about to go off-key at any moment but she doesn't, and that withstanding, she's actually quite good. She probably has the greatest range out of the group even if she's not the best at manipulating it (that would be underrated vocal empress Sunny) and she's only improved over the years. Her technique could be better and her damn bridges are a hot mess but imo she's their second best vocalist.
Thank you Her technique is dodgy, but then arguably so is Xtina's but that doesn't take away from the ability given the sound of their vocals. Jessica adds personality to the vocals of SNSD.
Tiffany is ok, but she went downhill after the vocal issues she suffered. The problem with Tiffany is that her vocals have been damaged somewhat, so the range is still there but she has huge problems with it. Her belting in Mr. Mr. is an example, I don't even know what that is going to sound like live.
The Boys without Jessica is horrible. Seohyun is a stable singer but her voice lacks personality compared to Taeyeon and Jessica and even Tiffany and Sunny. Apparently TTS would have been JTS, but SM was persuaded to add Seo instead by Taeyeon.
After 3 years of waiting obviously people are going to be excited and think the album is utter perfection.
Listening to the album more and more makes u have another opinion than what you originally had.
I love the album for real but opinions change after the hype is gone.
I really enjoy CRUSH and still do after a little time has passed. I won't use Happy ever or If I Were You but the rest is gold and I think I prefer Korean Scream to Japanese Scream.

This is true. I have heard it 10 times already and I have some different opinions.
Overall I think it's a solid album and they really delivered.
I can't rank their releases. It's actually near impossible. Their second album is probably their best, because of the iconic IAMTB and Lonely, but I can't put anything last. ESPECIALLY NOT THE FIRST MINI

I still stand by everything but the title track making up their best release in a minute there. The title track, as I've said from the start, could use some extra work.
Ish happens.
I wasn't talking about you specifically, but since you brought up the apparent correlation between success and quality perception I just added another example.
The hype has already settled for me and I realize that I love every track, which is a first for any of their releases. Though I'm counting the 4 previous singles as part of the Crush era so for me that increases its score beyond just the 10-track album.

That's what I realized of course I was extremely hyped but once I let the album sink in and actually gave it more listens my opinion changed and I feel like 'Crush' was missing something it could have been better. Oh well I still think the album is good and the most important part it's finally out and thats all that matters now.
tbh "Crush" is exactly what everyone's been begging for so I don't see the big problem suddenly now that it's *Gasp* not walking on the roof
funny. how. that. works. yet. again.
That works both ways. Like how their 2013 singles were pounded for being bad, some calling them terrible, but as soon as Crush drops and the hype raises, these singles are suddenly "not as bad as people make them out to be" and "they're actually really good". How good/bad an artist is doing can make a fans opinions pretty fickle. I can't judge since I can be guilty of it too.

I won't take away 2NE1's past discography. While I only listened a little while ago, To Anyone and their 2nd Mini are fantastic albums and for that reason, I guess they do have fair reason to be seen as a pinnacle artist of this genre. I think for any artist at or around that level there's a fine line between being highly praised and being overrated. And yes, that's true. That mentally is the most annoying thing though, but what can you do.
If f(x)'s Pink Tape, which is praised to the high heavens and rightly so, and CRUSH were released on the same day at the same time, who would be praised more? I guess that's what I'm getting at. A certain artist being put so high up a pedestal can be a curse because it can haze peoples views on other things. That's been the problem with many Western artists too, like Gaga.
I'm not saying people can't enjoy Crush over Pink Tape, how peoples actual opinions are on things is up to them, but I hope people understand what I'm getting at.
