BUT according to some janet stans in a thread I read a while ago, janet made some crucial mistakes that harmed her chances of recovery:
1. Cancelling the European dates to her 'All for You' tour after 9/11, alienating her European fans (keep in mind from janet. to AFY, Janet was actually kinda global - especially with 'Together Again' and 'All for You')
2. not touring for Damita Jo
3. apologizing??? Idk about this one.
4. releasing 20 YO??? Idk about this one either but some of her fans were saying she should have re-released 'Control' with new tracks instead.
It also didn't help that Janet was already on a decline. Janet: 15m or 20m idk, TVR: 10m, AFY: 7m so Damita Jo was naturally going to sell less. It's just the Superbowl exacerbated her decline.
feel free to correct me if i'm wrong

just a little while, her lead single was getting strong sales, airplay, and video play on mtv/mtv hits before the superbowl. it completely vanished afterward. all nite also would have been a hit had the blacklist not happened. i doubt damita jo would have matched all for you's sales but it definitely wouldn't have stalled at platinum.
i agree the european leg being canceled due to 9/11 did help alienate her european fans but she was planning to make up for it by making a more extensive tour in 2004 but that couldn't happen because she couldn't find a sponsor or venues who would take her since she was blacklisted. the european thing esp. did her in. the fact that she didn't tour europe since 1998 was a big problem imo. tons of younger female artists debuted since then and were flourishing.
