Honestly, it's all in the promo. She didn't do the right slots or give it enough focus or give it a music vid.

Even one with RK, as controversial as it would have been at the time, would have made it leap into the BB Top 10 and it would have spurred sales.

It really did. My art teacher was complaining to me one day when I was singing it that at least one person in every period she had that day was singing the song I wish there had been a video NOT directed by some monkey-lookin pervert, my queen would've had another top 3 under her belt.

How ironic, I just went to go withdraw from an ATM and Do What U Want was playing

My best friend who loved TFM but didn't like BTW at all started loving Gaga again the moment DWUW was released. She liked Applause, but she LOVED DWUW. She was literally playing it nonstop for weeks. And she loves ARTPOP too.

If it had a video, I think it definitely would've been a hit. The fact it reached 90M AI with no video and minimal promotion shows how much radio power Gaga has this era.
