GUY, MANiCURE, DWUW, Gypsy are all much better lead choices than Applause. Applause or Venus would have worked as a follow up to Alejandro.

In 2013, Applause was not IT. DWUW is a refreshing lead single and Gypsy offers something relatable and relevant. GUY is what everybody wanted from Gaga since 2010. It is Gaga classic Gaga, not annoyingly obnoxious Gaga that came on the scene during BTW era. MANiCURE....same as Gypsy

Applause was the perfect lead single choice, and it faired pretty well competing in the top 10 with THE biggest hits of the year (BL, Roar, Royals, etc.) if the competition wasn't so stiff it would've peaked higher. Don't let chart success fool you though, no other song would've done as good as a lead single as Applause.
