No surprise, it was like she never left. Mother Monster began on a modern grand piano for a quiet rendition of the first verse. Then that trance beat kicks in and by the end she was down on the stage doing her faraway-look art freakout dance. I don’t know about you, but the live take gave me a new appreciation for the track.

While she is certainly fond of all the bells and whistles, Lady Gaga excels when it is just her at a piano performing the songs with the barest of accompaniment and showing off her strong voice. The song later brings in the electronic elements and a full band, but the stark opening is the best part.

In the “Tonight Show” performance, Gaga begins all subdued-like, crooning behind a massive, crystal piano dressed in #AllWhiteEverything like motherf***ing Queen Frostine brought to life. Then, she picks up the tempo and launches into full “YAAAS, GAGA!” mode, marching down to the audience to belt out a mighty “WHOO-HEE-HEE” with total Monster prowess.

Amidst smoke and mirrors, Lady Gaga stormed the Tonight Show stage last night (Feb. 18) for a finely tuned performance of the title track off her 2013 album, ARTPOP.

With center-parted, butt-length white hair and extreme winged eyeliner, Gaga was an ethereal and otherworldly vision, seated at her piano as she delivered a slow, sultry first verse and chorus.
She sped things up for the second chorus, turning the Fallon stage into a disco party for the second half of the song. Her piano was situated on a riser, so she proceeded over the action as she tickled those ivories.
Mother Monster descended the ramp for the last third of the song, dancing with her band, also dressed in all white. It was epic and dramatic, and thoroughly Ma Monster-esque. She reminded us that she is a consummate performer.

Dressed in all white, sitting behind a beautiful piano, the songstress ran through the title track of her album, ARTPOP, showcasing her amazing vocals, and of course, her unique and creative style. The Mother Monster never disappoints, and she definitely didn’t last night.

Lady Gaga showed up last night on Jimmy Fallon's second day as host of the Tonight Show to prove a point: in spite of a year that included hip surgery, management problems and potentially disastrous album release, she's still one of the best performers in the world today.
