Well, certainly. But it's people who review albums and people who listen to them. The "people" who spend their lives analyzing the industry are pretty reliable in my book, and in most avid music listeners'.

Of course music is subjective, don't be daft.

However when you're arguing online in conversations that literally hold no importance, Metacritic does just fine as a barometer of how good something is received, and it's an easy extension to overall quality.
