Well, it's definitely one of the most distinct instruments/symbols of country/folk.
I think country music as a genre is too heavily defended as exclusive. Most country music on radio is glorified pop anyway. I'd say the most important or powerful trait of modern country is generally the narrative song structure. But that doesn't apply to all tracks.
Songs like "Mine" and "Red" are just minimally country pop crossovers, which is exactly what she was shooting for. They kind of suck though, and I'm a defender of both her poppier and more country songs, so I don't necessarily care to defend them often either.
