Some good stuff from Jason Aldean:
You’ve done some collaborations with a number of artists – Ludacris, Kelly Clarkson. Is there anyone on your wish list you want to collaborate with?
I think there’s a lot of people I’d love to work with. But I think the songs dictate it though, you know. The song with Kelly - she was the voice I had in mind for that song, and really didn’t have another one. I wanted her on it, period, and luckily, we could get her in board. I’m a huge George Strait fan, and I’d love to work with him. Adele – I love Adele. There’s a lot of people I’d love to work with at some point, but I think the song has to be the right thing. It has to be the right fit.
Is it important to do that, to maybe reach new ears, get a new audience?
I don’t know. A lot of people think about it like that – “If we can get this to cross over, then, we can reach this audience.” Once you start doing that, you overthink it. You do what seems right, and what works, and let it happen on its own. With Kelly, that wasn’t something we intended for pop radio to play. It was something we cut for my record, that we were going to release to country radio, and it got a life of its own on pop radio. Same thing with “Dirt Road Anthem” – it got played on pop radio, and we didn’t even try. I think when you do that, especially in the country format, to let it happen on its own, that’s a better way to approach it than going, “I’m a country act, but I want to get my stuff played on pop radio because I can reach more fans that way.” More times than not, it’s not going to work out that.
