Britney could have become a legend, however she prematurely ended all interest in her career in 2004-5 which solidified herself as a pop icon in those short years. As a stan I will never forgive her for this, just imagine what kind of legendary mammoth she would be now if she kept the energy and confidence from her debut

Beyonce is likely to become a legend if she keeps going the way she's going, probably the only legend to arise from the current generation of pop girls.

No, I am not missing any point babe. Michael Jackson stopped caring about his music career long before he passed away, which goes against your theory. You tend to forget, I mean, I don't even know how old you guys are and I admit I wasn't following Britney in her early steps but everyone, EVERYONE, knows her and that has to mean something. She was bigger than what Rihanna/Katy/Gaga, etc. all were and just because she doesn't kill herself promoting her work or releasing singles after singles doesn't mean she won't be a legend. If she wasn't a legend her Vegas residency would flop and it's doing great just by her name.

Britney isn't a legend, most legends are respected by the GP/music industry. Britney will always be seen as the ultimate bubblegum pop star at her time but that's it. She's an icon.

Beyonce is building her path on becoming a legend but she's not quite there yet.

I love Britney, but I really don't think she will ever be considered a legend. She's a icon who represents the teen pop era and could have become a legend, but her breakdown and subsequent lack of interest in music ruined that. Beyoncé is on her way to being a legend though. She has longevity, is a great performer, a high profile marriage, is known as a feminist and inspiration for women (whether that's deserved or not is a different story

) and a great reputation in the industry and with the GP. If Britney made better decisions, she'd be in the legendary lane for sure, but nowadays I think most people either feel sorry for her or don't care about her.

Britney Spears was a teen idol like Justin Bieber or One Direction today and her stans seem to have on rose colored glasses thinking that her fame in those 3 or 4 years and the media attention that she got during her breakdown made her a legend. It didn't. Her music is not legendary, her image is not original and the only people looking up to her are her fellow Disney stars.

Beyoncé isn't all the way there yet but give her time and she will be at the rate she's going

Britney is most certainty not a legend. Sorry stans, but being an energetic popstar for like five years and then being a walking zombie for another 10 just isn't going to cut it. Legends don't perform the way Britney did during the FF era and tour.

Beyonce on the other has her legacy coming into full circle right now. She has the hits, she has the talent, she has the longevity, she has the respect, she has the glory, She has the cultural impact, and she has the acclaim. She's held to an extremely high standard even among her haters. (Unlike Britney who isn't held to any standard at all)

Britney simply doesn't have the drive to make it as a legend. She's an icon and had incredible success during the 90's/early 2000s. But she has yet to earn the respect that would elevate her to "legend" status.

Beyonce is on her way. She's definitely closer to becoming a legend than Britney.

You can't compare the two though. If you include his work with his brothers, Michael worked consistently from 1969-2001. By 2001 he stopped caring. It's justified though because he gave over 30 years to the industry and changed the industry. Britney stopped caring roughly 7 years into her career. Her not caring about her career so young isn't a good look for her. Especially considering many of the artists that came before her were still considered "in their prime" 7 years into the career whereas Britney wasn't anymore.

Look at Marilyn. Michael Jackson. Elvis.

They all had stories, downfalls, peaks, tragedy, glory, etc.

Only Britney fits that mold.

Not you all acting like Britney was done in 2005, though. Her 2007 meltdown had more cultural impact than anything anyone else in the 2000s has done. Not only did she become the most searched person on the Internet of all-time and most photographed person ever, but she partied with a fading child star and a debutante nobody and made them bigger media fixtures than most peoples' faves have ever been. I get her record sales were low because she was a very polarizing figure, but unless you're old enough to remember Princess Diana's death, you've never seen a more culturally significant entertainment history moment in your lifetime.
