Most people my age (still relatively young) seem to be almost entirely unfamiliar with 1D. Aside from that, his first studio album sold more than any 1D album and his other merchandising campaigns at the time were also more successful than One Direction's have been.

It's not that he was so big with the teens that his fame spilled to other demographics, it's that everyone outside of his target demographic hated him. I am going to do a huge reach here but I'm trying to make a point: it's like trying to make Chris Brown his post-2009 hype seem bigger just because everyone hated him.
Following your logic Bieber was bigger than BSB since BSB never had any scandals and weren't hated..

He was also certainly a far bigger force socially and digitally than they were at their respective peaks.

Did he have a million opener? Let alone two?
Sure, My Worlds sold 8 million (9 million tops) but it had 2 releases (the EP and then the LP). 1D released 2 albums in 2012 with combined sales of 10.4 million and one Top 5 hit each. The teens have bought their material in a bigger volume and faster than Bieber's..
