Beatles couldn't tour due to the lack of volume on their speakers/amps and inability to recreate their music on stage in the 60s.

1D has the advantages of time:
- Bigger population
- Greater popularity of music. People afford to spend more time and money for music nowadays. People in the past simply didn't have the leisure to.
- The Internet which makes the band so much more global.
- Historical factors. Many countries were still at wars or colony at Beatles time, and I don't think most of the population there would bother with pop acts.
However, The Beatles was the biggest act of their time, so I think they would still have the upper hand.
Local act.

Beatles are still the biggest act. The best selling album last decade was 1 by The Beatles

When a 50 year old band still gets the best selling album of the decade (1 has 35 million and counting sold) they're obviously still eclipsing everyone else.
Population differences? Don't matter. Even with 2 billion or more people existing on this earth since The Beatles, One Direction STILL doesn't have the fame that The Beatles had or even still have today.
There is no way to make 1D look bigger than TB, it's simply illogical and unfactual.
