It's pretty common if your mother used while you were in the womb, you can be born with alcohol cravings or cravings for other drugs.
And no, that's still not quite how addiction works. You don't mentally delude yourself into thinking you need the drug to function, your body physiologically tells itself it needs the drug to function, for the harder opiates at least. Withdrawal symptoms aren't just a figment of the addict's imagination.
