I understand that the age of consent is 16, but do you know the age of consent in Japan? It's 13. Now can you tell me you would be Ok with a 13 year old having a sexual relationship with a college student? Or a senator? It's their age of consent, so it's OK right? My point is just because a nation has an age of consent, doesn't make it the right age. In my opinion, and many others, 16 is still too young. At least 18 you are actually done with schooling (unless you choose to go to college) and can choose your path from that point. She still has high school to finish.

Yeah it's slightly weird they are in a relationship but it's legal and that's all that really matters to them. As for Japan that is wrong but I've been brought up in a society which has the consensual age as 16, so for Japenese in a legal standpoint it would be 'right' for them. Besides age of consents are rarely followed, when similar ages.

The overreaction in here though. First of all, who hasn't been dating/seeing someone at 17? Surely it's not the age where you are old enough to make big decisions, but it's not like she's getting married to this guy  They are just hanging out, doing whatever. I don't see the what's the big deal about it. And 7 years is not such a huge difference.

You outright say it isn't wrong in a case like this? Don't you think it's harsh and unjustified? 
Age of consent in my country is 16, but if it were 18, then legally I would have been a pedophile myself at one point. My girlfriend in school was 16, turning 17, when I was already 18. I had a year and 5 months on her, she was a class below me.
Is that "weird" to you, and should I have thought twice about it? Really?

Anyway I still agree with J03y, being 16 and 18 or even 20 years old are completely different stages in one's life and development as a person.

It ultimately results in cultural differences. Yes I do think 13 is too young but I also think at her current age she can make decisions for her self, although as you said which may not be fully developed. The question also comes to mind is "Who gets to decide what the right age". Is there a right age that can be set for everyone? Number is just a number in the end, some 16 year old kids are more mature than a 30 year old.

The definition of a paedophile is someone who's only attracted to people under the age of 11, by the way. You're mixing up the age at which you're considered to be an adult and the age at which you are able to be considered mature enough to have sex, they're different issues all together.
