So to see Fassbender's competition, I finally watched this mess, last night:

"Dallas Buyers Club" is definitely better than "American Hustle," in every way imaginable. The fact that a movie about AIDS is more entertaining than "American Hustle" speaks to how boring, overrated, and lifeless "American Hustle" truly is. But Matthew McConaughey does not deserve the Academy Award over Leonardo DiCaprio in any way, shape, or form. I respect McConaughey for wanting to be a "serious actor" and taking on "heavier" roles, but this role was NOT a stretch for Matthew McConaughey to play. Matthew McConaughey plays a skinny, homophobic version of himself, essentially. Is there a movie where Matthew McConaughey
doesn't play a "dumb-but-not-really-dumb" southern boy? Lord. And there was one scene where McConaughey's character is crying by himself in a car that was
horribly acted. McConaughey winning over DiCaprio would be a travesty. That is
the truth.
As for Jared Leto -- I don't know where to start. For one, I find it obnoxious how in all of his interviews (
and even when accepting his Golden Globe) he constantly states, "You know, I hadn't done a movie in six years..." as if he's a picky actor and the world of acting missed him. Leto is a decent, competent actor, but he's definitely not Daniel Day Lewis. Jared Leto is not an Oscar-winning type of actor -- not yet, anyhow. Leto was competent in his role as Ray in "Dallas Buyers Club," but does he deserve the Oscar over Michael Fassbender in "12 Years A Slave?" Negative.
The bottom line is that the only reason why both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are getting attention for their roles in "Dallas Buyers Club" is because of the weight loss they both went through for their respective roles. It's such a shame that losing weight for a role automatically puts you into the "Oscar spotlight" (Anne Hathaway, anyone?) when more deserving actors (Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Fassbender) deserve more praise for their work and the Academy Award, this year.
