I think what they meant is that religion and the morals it taught are the basis of what have become the laws, like that murder is wrong

Nope, disagree. Humans would never be stupid enough to allow murder. I'm sure we could have quickly figured it out for ourselves when the victims families were like "oh my god this is ****ing awful ".

Besides, religion has sometimes taught that murder is "right"...the punishment for leaving Islam is death. And how many religions encourage animal sacrifices?

I disagree. for example the bible says white people should own slaves yet we figured out that is wrong, it also says that women who were raped have to marry their rapist and we figured out that's wrong etc.
