He watches it but how do you know he's a big fan ? Maybe he just watched one episode, enjoyed it, and decided to tweet the guy.
Even if it was discussed a bit in the media doesn't mean he saw it. They released a fricking album around the time of the controversy, it isn't unreasonable to think he didn't hear about it.
I do agree he shoudln't have reacted that way. However, you generally have two kinds of people when dealing with a controversy : those, overly sensitive, who then have some kind of meltdown, and those who are capable of taking a step back. Obviously, as the idiot he is, he's from the first category.

He literally said in the tweet he's a big fan. Like word for word, that's exactly what he said. 
I think it's quite clear there are several people who just don't want to believe it's true because they like the band or Liam personally. However, it's ****ed up what he said and is continuing to say. If people don't care what he said or can forgive him, that's on them, but I think it's a huge reach to keep trying to defend what he said by throwing all these possible scenarios of him not knowing about the controversy when it was a huge deal. It's clear as day to me what he said and meant, and this is coming for someone who liked them enough to have them in my signature earlier today. But homophobia is homophobia to me and I find it unacceptable, even if someone I like showcases it.

I do agree though that there's this tendancy from some gay people to see homophobes everywhere, for one because they are passionnate about the cause they defend, and secondly because as a minority (one which was long persecuted no less) you tend to enter in defense mode rather easily. So the intentions are noble I'd say but the almost paranoiac way of dealing with it is dreadul. Before labelling people as homophobes, just ask them to clarify what they meant if you have any doubts.
